St. Patrick’s Day 1 Mile/5K in Biloxi, MS.
I participated in my first Gulf Coast race this past Saturday with some friends who live on the coast. The race was held in downtown Biloxi about a block away from the beach. I am not familiar with the area at all and was afraid I was going to get lost until I saw a sea of a couple hundred folks all dressed in green. My running singlet was more of a neon yellow but I blended in.
Luckily my running partner was holding a place in line for me because the crowd waiting to register was massive. I decided to register for both the 1 mile and 5K. Normally the 1 mile is reserved for children, however they were offering money for the top three adult finishers so I decided to give it a shot.
The 1 mile race was supposed to start at 9:00am but got pushed back to 9:20am because of the crowd still waiting to register. I have not done any type of speedwork whatsoever but I managed to pull off a second place win with a time of 6:30. Still about 45 seconds off of my best time but I am not 17 anymore either.
The 5K finally started around 10:00am and it was HOT! I definitely was beat from the 1 mile race and the heat so it was a slow one for me. I finished in about 24:18, which is my slowest 5K in probably 2 years.
Once I go to the finish line I sadly realized they were out of water. This is only the second time I have ever seen this at a race, the first being a July 4th race in San Antonio, TX and I do not have to tell you how hot that was. Upon speaking to some people after the race they informed me that they anticipated about 150 people for the race and over 500 showed up. They definitely had some angry pre-registered people who did not get their shirts and a lot of people were upset about the delayed start time. Hey it happens, at least they will be better prepared for next year.
At the awards ceremony I got a $50 check for 2nd in the 1 mile and a nice green trophy for 2nd in the 30-34 division.
I had a great time and I will definitely be trying out more races on the coast. Next up is the Great St. Charles 10K on the 31st.
