Race of the Week: YMCA Winter Classic 10K
My featured race of the week is the YMCA Winter Classic. It is Saturday January 18, 2014 at 8:00am. The race is being held at The Blossman Family YMCA on Government Street in downtown Ocean Springs, MS.
I did the race last year for the first time and it is definitely worth the drive, which is about 45 minutes from Slidell.
The race is hosted by the Gulf Coast Running Club. I have ran many of their events over the past years and it is always top notch.
The out and back course starts in downtown Ocean Springs and takes you through several neighborhoods. Warning! This is where you will encounter some hills. The hills are really not much but anything that isn’t flat is a challenge for us Southerners. Once you get out of the residential area you will run along the gulf and beachfront. You then take a turn back into a neighborhood and head to the turn around inside of a local park. Then you turn around,do it all again, and head back to the finish line.
The scenery of this race is absolutely beautiful especially the beachfront. This area is relatively quiet and has low vehicle traffic. There are police officers present though to block any vehicles.
The award ceremony and post party are not at the finish line. You must get into your car and drive to Ocean Springs High School. Make sure you find it on a map before you go. There are several schools in that area and I got lost a few times and missed the awards. The post race party is held in conjunction with a Winter Festival and is inside the high school football stadium.
The awards from last year, pictured above, were hand crafted snowflakes ornaments.
