The Quadburners race series is in its second year. The third race of the series, Hot Pursuit, was held Saturday July 9 at the Washington St. Pier in Bay St. Louis, MS.

The series consists of five races this year and participants receive a medal after every race which connects at the race finale to make one giant medal. A fifth bonus race, Brew Ho Ho Beer mile, was added and participants can earn a bonus medal and series t-shirt.

I completed the first series race, Frosted Fanny, in February and won 1st place. At the second race, It Takes Two (2 person relay), held in May, my partner and I took home 5th overall team.

The Hot Pursuit was also a 4 mile race, like the rest of the series. I was coming off of the Four on the Fourth mile race held a few days prior, so I felt prepared for the distance and more importantly the heat.

I arrived to the race, stepped out of the car, and the heat and humidity hit me like a flying brick. I knew this was going to be a slow, tough race.

At 8:00am we were off into the heat on the Mississippi Coast beachfront.

My high school track coach taught me the best running lesson in 1998 and changed my running life forever. “Go out strong and fast and never look back.” I used to hang back then try to make a move later in the race but that never served me well.

I employed that philosophy and took off as fast as the grueling heat would allow. I stuck with the first place person, a male, and we were alone at the front of the pack finishing the first mile in 7:17.

I backed off some because I knew I had to store some energy for the turnaround. I finished the second mile in 8:02.

At the turnaround I could see the second place female was a way back so I relaxed and focused on making it through the last two miles.

Mile three took us face first into the blazing sun. It was so hot I could feel the heat from the pavement coming through the soles of my shoes. I finished mile three in 8:53.

I was really dragging and disheartened with my very slow pace. I knew the heat would not allow for fast times so I gave myself a break. I used the image of a cold, frosty, post-race beer for motivation and finished the four mile race in 33:14, for an 8:19 pace.

My effort was good enough for first place female and fourth person overall.

I cooled down with the ice water and ice towels provided and watched my running partner finish strong.

The race was tough but I had a great time as always. The Quadburners have the formula set for a great race and even better race party.
