The Woodlake Elementary Pel-I-Can 2 mile run was held Saturday March 21 at the Mandeville Lakefront. The race was part of the Pelican Palooza which was an all day event that raised money for the school.
Even though the forecast called for thunderstorms all week, the weather on race morning was gorgeous: blue sunny skies and pleasant temperatures. I actually got to wear running shorts for the first time since September. I have been shying away from wearing shorts because of the nasty scar from my dog bite last summer. It is a slow healing process but it does look a lot better.
The 2 mile race started at 8:15am. It was an out and back course on the Lakefront path. I was not sure what to expect for a race pace. I have been doing speed work all winter during half marathon training so I wanted to stay under 8 minute miles.
I started off at a 7:15 pace and managed to keep that through the 1 mile turnaround. I was closing in on the first place female but at the start of mile 2 she took off and left me in her dust.
I slowed down to a 7:35 pace during mile 2 and started to feel the fatigue. I pushed on and finished in 14:49. I was pleased and it was good practice for the upcoming 2 milers and 5Ks this spring and summer.
The kids half mile race followed at 9:00am. There was some fierce competition amongst the elementary school children. The teacher-student relay race followed and the students were the champions.
The awards ceremony was next. The top overall finishers won a new pair of running shoes from New Balance. The age group winners won shirts, also from New Balance. I won the 30-39 age group.
Pelican Palooza began after the race with food, games, and raffles.
Next up for me is the Lions Athletics Association Green and Gold 5K Saturday at Southeastern University. The race raises money for the student athletics association and includes a finish line inside Strawberry Stadium.
Until next time!
