Halloween Hustle

Saturday was the 2nd annual Halloween Hustle in Bay St. Louis, MS. The 4 mile road race and duathlon concluded the Quad Burners series for the year.

We were spared from the Great Halloween storm of 2015, which would arrive a few hours later. It was very windy but at least it was not too hot.

My Mississippi running friend and I opted to do the road race. The out and back course was on the paved portion of the beach front. The path was crowded until the one mile mark where the duathlon folks turned around to head to the bicycle transition.

I finished the first mile in 7:30 and was already feeling tired. Entering the second mile I realized I was in second place so I tried to stay with the first place female.

At the turnaround, which was the end of mile 2 (7:45 pace), I moved to first place. I was able to hang on until the end of mile three, but I slowed to a 8:00 pace. I was passed in the last mile and I was exhausted to say the least. I gave it my all and closed the gap to about seven seconds, but I still came in second.

My final time was 31:47, 2nd overall and 1st age group. It is far from my four mile personal record of 30:05, but I really didn’t train properly for this race either.

The duathletes were still competing so we helped ourselves to a delicious BBQ dinner provided by Tay’s BBQ. We enjoyed the beach views while we munched on our pulled pork sandwiches and drank our frosty brews.

The awards ceremony was held on a pavilion on the beach. The top three male and female finishers for the 4 mile race and Duathlon earned Quad Burner mugs, in Halloween colors of course. Every course record for the series was broken at this event so the record holders won swag bags. The race even had fun awards like “oldest, “youngest,” and “middle of the pack.”

All finishers received a “Halloween Hustle” long sleeved hooded tee as well as the finisher medal. The medal by itself was impressive enough, but if you completed all four races the medals actually connected to form one giant amazing medal. This is seriously the coolest race medal I have seen and I will be signing up for the whole series next year so I can get one.

Next up is the inaugural Battleship 12K in Mobile, AL on November 15. Hope to see you there! www.battleship12k.com
