Green & Gold 5K
Hammond, Louisiana was the place to be Saturday morning. The Hammond BBQ and Blues Festival was held downtown and Super Lion Saturday was held at the Southeastern Louisiana University Campus. The Green and Gold 5K kicked of Saturday’s Super Lion activities.
As you guessed I worked all night, as usual, and headed to the race after a 12 hour shift. Driving to the race through Hammond made me hungry since about 100 cooks were doing some early morning BBQing in preparation for the BBQ Festival.
I arrived at Strawberry Stadium on SLU’s campus where the Lions Athletic Association was presenting the race. The 1 mile race began at 8:00am and was followed by the 5K at 8:30am.
The course started outside Strawberry Stadium and took us around the west perimeter of the campus. I started in first place for the females and was at a 6:30 pace. I was more than thrilled to be running at this pace but knew I probably would slow down.
After going through the tunnel to cross to the North Campus we hit mile 1. My first mile was 7:07. I took a peek over my shoulder at one of the turns to see the 2nd place female wasn’t too far behind.
I dropped to a 7:20 pace and just focused on keeping that pace which took me into mile three. The third mile took us back on campus as we headed for the finish. The last turn towards the stadium came sooner than I thought and I realized the course was about .2 miles short.
Our final 100 meters took us into Strawberry Stadium for an exciting finish on the football field. I won 1st female and finished 2.9 miles in 21:38. The clock was displayed on the large electronic scoreboard and every finisher received a medal. The men’s and women’s soccer teams were on hand to cheer the runners at the finish line.
We took a group photo with the teams after the race. I received a gift card to Perfectly Fit Sports, a local running store, as my 1st place prize.
This was a very fun and unique race and I look forward to running again next year.
Next up for me is the Crescent City Classic Saturday. Hope to see you there. Until next time!
