Happy’s New Orleans 5K

The Happy’s Irish Pub 5K was held yesterday in downtown New Orleans. The race was presented by New Orleans Running Systems, Happy’s, Varsity Sports, and Brooks. The 5K benefitted the Crimestoppers of New Orleans.

After harassing my co-worker for the past week I finally convinced her to do this race with me.  As soon at 5:00pm hit I clocked out of work and we were on our way.

Luckily the skies cleared up from the morning monsoon and the sun even made an appearance. Unfortunately it was hot…..really hot…….and HUMID. I was already sweating as soon as we get out of the car.

The race festivities were held in the parking lot across the street from Happy’s Irish Pub.

My sole reason for participating in this event was for Hot 100 points (points for the Varsity Sports 100 days of summer challenge). I knew it would be tough to pull it off because it is my work weekend and I had been up since 4:00am. My schedule did not allow me to participate in many of the Hot 100 events so I had to make this race happen for ten huge points. Pictured below are some of the Varsity Sports Hot 100 runners.

The 5K began at 6:30pm. The course took us up and down Poydras St. then we made a loop around the block of the post race site. I started out at my usual sub 7:00 pace but the temperature started to get to me early on. You could feel the heat coming off of the blacktop street. It was 91 with a heat index of 96 which is actually below average for this time of year but it was still torturous.

I finished the first mile in 7:14 which was not a great start. I slowed down to a 7:50 pace for mile 2. Normally I pick people off one by one as I progress but I was the one being passed this time. I managed to slightly pick up the pace towards the end and finished in 23:36 for the 5K. Not a great time for me but considering the heat I was happy.

I found my co-workers after the race and we took a Team Mandeville Police photo. Pictured below are myself, Vicki McCain, and Rachel Leboeuf. Both girls got a PR! Amazing!

My running club, The 15th Street Flyers, were also present.

The post race party included food provided by Nonna Mia and the plaid skirted Happy’s gals. Abita Beer provided the liquid refreshments. Brooks had shoe demonstrations and All American Chiropractors were giving massages to the runners. A live band played on the Abita Stage.

The post race festivities carried on into the night. I wish I could have stayed longer but I was definitely tired and had to get back up for work again at 4:00am.

I am not sure when my next race will be but I have stared my annual half-marathon training already. Racking up the miles in the summer sun has been rough but I have my eye on another PR this year at the Gulf Coast Half Marathon in October. As for the Hot 100 I have 64 points with one month to go. Hopefully I reach 100! Until next time.

Varsity Summer Series #3

The third race of the Varsity Sports Summer Series was held yesterday at Varsity Sports Mandeville. The theme for the event was the “Shirtless Shakedown” and was presented by Newton. Many of the men went sans shirt and the women donned variations of sport bra tops.

My co-workers and I reported for duty at 5:00am yesterday but somehow I talked them into running the race with me when our shift ended at 5:00pm. Talk about some tough guys and gals. This is the third race “Team Mandeville Police” has participated in since May.

Luckily for the runners the rain cleared up and the temperatures were not as hot as usual…….but that humidity…ouch. The kids half mile race started at 6:15 followed by the 2 mile at 6:30.

I was determined to beat my time from two weeks ago, 14:51. I was pretty confident I could since I ran that race in the rain and while still battling food poisoning.

I started out at a 6:30 pace and tried to keep up with the super fast high school girls. Well that didn’t last long. I finished mile one in 7:03. I eased up on mile 2, as I usually do, and finished the 2 mile race in 14:29. Not my best time but I was happy with my effort. One day I will return to my early twenties glory of a sub 14 minute 2 mile. I know breaking my personal record, 12:45, will NEVER happen again.

After I finished I went back out to the course to cheer on the rest of Team Mandeville Police. Officer Scott Thomas finished in 17:15, Sergeant Fred Fath 19:29, Officer Chris Pittman 19:30, and Dispatcher Vickie McCain in 22:20.

We took a post race picture to celebrate.

The final race of the Varsity Sports Summer Series will be held Wednesday July 23. The theme will be “Run Like You Stole It.”

Next up for me is the New Orleans Bull Run this Saturday. Hope to see you there!
