Today was the Gulf Coast Half Marathon held at Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville, LA. The weather could not have been better. It was sunny and stayed in the 50s for the whole race. I came to the race in a singlet but switched to a long sleeve shirt and I am glad I did. It got breezy by the lake.

Let’s rewind to 36 hours before the race. I finally finished 9 shifts in a row at work and was excited to finally start my 3 day weekend. We were out to dinner with some friends and that is when what would be a 12 hour round of kidney stones hit me. The stones finally passed when I woke up Saturday morning but my back was sore the whole day. For those who know me my kidney stones are pretty frequent but every a few months I get some really painful ones.

Needless to say I was not very confident going in to the race. My ultimate goal was to break 1:50:00 but then I started lowering my expectations to just breaking my previous record of 1:54:46. Then I even said I would be happy just breaking 2 hours.

I started the race out taking it easy and just seeing how I felt. I had no race plan. I decided to just let my legs take the metaphorical wheel.

I had my “running” Bachelorette Party Saturday at the New Orleans Jazz Half Marathon/5K. We originally were going to do the half-marathon but reality set in and we opted for the 5K. I am really glad we did because it was hot and humid. I felt bad for the runners doing the half especially because there was not much shade on the course.

I decided to look as bridal as I could in running clothes and wore all white and my veil from my original Bachelorette Party. The girls wore purple running tops as the “bridal party.” We even had bouquets that we held in our hands as we ran.

I wasn’t the only bride there. I met a woman who was actually getting married that day….and she did the half marathon!

We decided to make it a fun run and we all ran together at a casual pace. We talked and laughed the whole time, took pictures, and even ate donuts during the race.

Props to my mother who participated and finished her first 5K!

Next up is the Gulf Coast Half Marathon this Sunday in Mandeville, LA. This will be my 7th half. I am not as nervous as I was last week but I am sure I will be a

I had my last long run yesterday. I ran 6 miles on the St. Tammany Trace. The run definitely did not do me any favors. I felt tired and disappointed. I finished at about an 8:58 pace. I feel I should be a lot faster and stronger with my half just over a week away.

My goal for the Gulf Coast Half Marathon is under 1:50:00 which is about an 8:20 pace. My fastest time ever for a half was around the 1:54 mark.

I don’t know if I am having a mental block or if I am just really not a strong half marathon runner. I’ll be honest….13.1 miles scares the crap out of me. I dread mile 9 because that is when I start hitting the wall. I have been reading up on tips to try to avoid that. Here are some of the tips I have come across:

– Pace yourself. Don’t start off too fast just because you feel strong. That feeling will go away….trust me.

– Hydrate and fuel properly. Eat breakfast, something light but filling. Try bread, bagels, cereal, and/or fruit. You need between 30-60 grams of carbs per hour during a race. I like GU Energy Gel. I have one 15 minutes before, about 45 minutes into the race, then another around the 1:30:00 mark. You will have to decide what is right for you depending on your pace and estimated finish time. Also make sure you are drinking water every 15 minutes during the race. You will need some type of supplement during the race. Being hungry and having your stomach growling with over 5 miles to go is miserable and will slow you down.

– Body Glide!!!! If your thighs rub up against each other like mine do then Body Glide will be your best friend. Apply some to your inner thighs about 15-30 minutes before the race. This will prevent chaffing. You can also use it on your feet before you put on your socks to reduce blisters.

– Rest. Try not to run or do much 2 days before the race so your legs are fresh. Get a good night of sleep before the race. For those of you that know me you are probably laughing right now because I do most of my races right after I clock out from working the night shift.

– Train your brain. Study a map of the course before the race. Try to envision yourself running the course and what your splits should be to reach your goal.

I hope some of these tips help. I will definitely keep everyone posted on my race.

This weekend some friends and I are doing the Jazz Half-Marathon/5K in New Orleans, LA. We are making it a fun run and my running “Bachelorette” Party. Keep an eye out for the runaway bride! Until next time.
